Cumulatively layering expression, feeling and ideas with family, friends and place, Ms. Graves constructs her digital images through the computer and her large format printer. Working intuitively, creating strange new visions, she has in mind ‘kokoro ire’ meaning “inclusion of the heart’s spirit”. Portraits of her subjects are acutely drawn and their surroundings reveal visual narratives, montage, unexplainable elements and sifting through. Intimate and mysterious, the images convey multiple, additive meanings forming a complicated, yet tangible space. A digital photographer and large format printer, Kathleen Graves hails from a painting and dance background. Ms. Graves received an MA from New York University in 1997 as part of a unique degree program through the International Center of Photography and New York University. She teaches Digital Art Practice and Print at NYU and Sara Lawrence College. |
